From May 17th to 19th, Food Chemical Newspaper Inc. held the ifia/HFE JAPAN2023 exhibitions.
ifia JAPAN is an international exhibition specialized in food ingredients and additives, whereas HFE JAPAN focuses on health and functional food ingredients. The events were held for their 28th and 21st times respectively, and featured three days of seminars as well as company exhibitions.

On May 18th, a series of paid seminars titled “Development of Noteworthy New Proteins and Applied Technology 2023” brought together speakers from various businesses and backgrounds. Founder of VegeProject Japan Haruko Kawano joined as the keynote speaker and commenced the seminar as the first presenter.  VegeProject was also keynote speaker for last year’s half-day seminar series. Due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, this year the series of seminars was expanded to a full-day.

The theme of this year’s seminar was “Plant-based food market: current situation, future trends, and how to become involved.” At the seminar, we shared the current situation of the vegan market and the key points for success. We also conveyed the importance of understanding the importance and background of vegan plant-based choices. We believe that this is crucial in the expansion of this market in Japan.

As the last speaker, Associate Professor Daisuke Hagiwara of the University of Tsukuba’s Department of Life and Environmental Sciences gave a lecture on the research and development of mycoproteins. Each with a distinctive perspective, all speakers introduced the functionality and product value of materials related to alternative proteins and the potential of mycoproteins from bacteria, creating an informative and compelling series of seminars.

Adjacent to the seminar hall was the exhibition hall crowded with booths and participants eager to encounter novel and inventive food ingredients. Phrases such as  “plant-based” and “soy meat” were frequently visible on the packaging of products, and products certified by our organization were also on exhibit.
