On July 7, 2026, an event was held at Tottori City Hall announced that Tottori City had achieved Japan’s highest number of restaurants offering vegan menus per capita.

The event was organized by the Tottori Prefecture No. 1 Vegan Project Promotion Council. The council is chaired by Mr. Yukichi Fukui, who runs the vegan restaurant Daruma no Ki in Tottori City. Haruko Kawano, Representative Director of VegeProject Japan, serves as vice chair.

Congratulatory remarks were delivered by Tottori Mayor Yoshihiko Fukazawa and officials from Tottori Prefecture and Tottori City. Other speakers included a director of the Tottori City Tourism and Convention Association, the executive director of the Tottori Prefecture Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry, and the chair of the Tottori Prefecture Restaurant and Food Service Sanitation Association. Members of the prefectural and city assemblies also spoke.

Our representative gave a presentation on the distinctive features and value of Tottori’s initiatives.

Restaurant owners who have started offering vegan options also attended. They provided vegan dishes for tasting. The dishes included meat-style dishes made with soy meat and bread made without eggs or dairy products. Other dishes included fried okara konjac coated in a special sauce and Indian biryani. The guests enjoyed the wide variety of high-quality vegan dishes.

About one year ago, a seminar and tasting exchange event was held on how to accommodate vegan diners. Our representative also served as a speaker. This marked the start of full-scale efforts to expand vegan options in Tottori City and Tottori Prefecture.
