From October 9 to 11, 2024, the international summit on veganism and animal welfare “Asia Farm Animal Day (AFAD) 2024” was held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
More than 400 activists and members from organizations around the world gathered for frontline information exchange and networking. VegeProject Japan was invited to participate as a a speaker.
Introducing About Our Collaborations with Local and National Governments
VegeProject Japan works with businesses, schools, government agencies, and municipalities to increase vegetarian, vegan, and plant-based options in Japan. At this year’s AFAD, we highlighted our collaborations with local and national governments.
We also introduced the increasing number of municipalities in Japan that are promoting vegetarian and vegan initiatives, with VegeProject Japan participating as a consultant or expert in these efforts.
VegeProject Japan’s representative Haruko Kawano has been serving as an advisor for projects hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government since 2019, supporting vegan-related initiatives. Additionally, VegeProject has been collaborating with municipalities like Taito City, Chiyoda City, Fukuoka City and Kameoka City to promote vegetarian and vegan options.
The presentation received positive feedback, with many attendees contacting us after the session. The following day, Angel Flores, the External Affairs Manager at World Animal Protection, cited VegeProject Japan’s presentation as an example of efforts to expand plant-based options in Asia.
Building a Global Network of Cooperation
AFAD 2024 saw participation from 164 organizations, ranging from major international groups like ProVeg International, Sinergia Animal, and Compassion in World Farming, to local organizations making steady progress in various countries. It provided a valuable opportunity for information exchange, networking, and learning about the growth of the vegan movement.
Inspired by exchanges with people making efforts for animals, the planet, and people, VegeProject Japan will continue working diligently to increase vegan options in Japan.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the organizers of AFAD and AVA Summit, our sponsors, and everyone we had the opportunity to connect with during the summit.
This was the second in-person AFAD. The first event was held last year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where VegeProject Japan was also invited as a speaker. Please see the article below for details about last year’s event.
