On the 23rd of February, 2024, Japan Times Alpha published an article about VegeProject Japan’s director, Haruko Kawano.
Japan Times is the oldest English-language newspaper in Japan. “Japan Times Alpha”, offered by the same publisher, is a newspaper targeted towards English learners, publishing articles for various proficiency levels.
In this article, Kawano shares how she became aware of animal and environmental issues, as well as her personal journey into a vegan lifestyle. She also discusses her experiences as an English learner herself. Additionally, she talks about how and why she started VegeProject Japan, as well as the “Meat Free Monday” campaign promoted by Sir Paul McCartney, whom she had the opportunity to interview back in 2015.
Kawano emphasizes how you can make a large impact on the planet and the lives of animals by eliminating or reducing animal products in your diet. The article concludes with Kawano’s “words to live by”: “Be the change you want to see in the world,” a quote attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, effectively motivating the reader to take action.
This article reaches a readership of English-learners who may not yet be familiar with vegan and plant-based food. We are grateful for the opportunity to introduce the importance of vegan choices and share our work with a broad audience.
